Collaborative project enables Capita Employee Benefits to move to e-learning, saving time and money for award-winning Team of the Year 2014

Introduction

In 2012, third-party pensions administrator Capita Hartshead merged with employee benefits intermediary Bluefin to create Capita Employee Benefits. With 1,200 clients and over 4 million pension scheme members under administration, Capita Employee Benefits needed a training solution that would maintain consistently high standards across all 2,500 staff.

Delivering classroom training to a workforce spread across 15 offices would be a costly struggle. Therefore, to strengthen the staff training programme, Capita decided to convert large amounts of training content to e-learning.

Unaware of any competitor implementing an in-house e-learning team, Capita chose to develop an internal team of experts, capable of producing high quality, bespoke e-learning content, from design through to production and testing.

Why Kallidus?

The Kallidus team was able to offer the flexibility of a truly collaborative approach, working in partnership with Capita to support their in-house e-learning development. Kallidus offered bespoke e-learning expertise, whilst Capita shared specialist knowledge on the subject of pensions and in-house systems alongside two in-house trainers: a classroom trainer and a new recruit with no previous L&D experience.

This collaborative approach saw the Kallidus team demonstrate, co-create and then step away from the development process, as they built a series of templates for the Capita team to populate and develop, and taught them the skills to create their own future e-learning courses, which could be delivered and tracked via Kallidus LMS.

The results

Although e-learning is nothing new to the pensions and benefits industry, Kallidus has enabled Capita Employee Benefits to stand head and shoulders above its competition, with a dedicated e-learning team capable of producing outstanding e-learning courses in-house. The move to e-learning has also had demonstrable benefits in terms of efficiency. Capita achieved Gold in partnership with Kallidus for Team of the Year, E-Learning Awards 2014.

  • The professional development team not only learned the art of instructional design and e-learning deployment, but went on to create a further 12 modules using the skills they had learned during the collaborative project.

  • Capita is now saving at least 1,000 trainer hours and 870 delegate hours a year by delivering an e-learning programme, and this is all undertaken with less risk, fewer delays and cost savings of £33,600 per annum.

  • Providing induction training to contractors/short-term temporary staff is rare in the pensions and benefits industry; however Capita’s e-induction training is accessible from day one, so new hires can be onboarded much more quickly than before.

  • E-learning has won over Capita’s workforce, and user satisfaction has increased by 6.5%, whilst satisfaction for classroom learning has decreased by 1.8%.
